Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct method of primary health care having as its primary goals to uncover the causes of illnesses, and to restore and maintain patient's health. The emphasis of naturopathic medicine is on nature's self-healing process, the "vis medicatrix naturae". This is accomplished through education and the rational use of natural therapeutics.

Naturopathic Doctors (ND's), the only regulated health professionals in the field of natural medicine in Ontario, treat the whole (hence the term "holistic") person. ND's consider the emotional, spiritual, mental and physical aspects of a patient in forming a diagnosis and in developing a treatment plan.

The principles of Naturopathy are:

  • Do no harm
  • Act in cooperation with the healing power of nature
  • Address the fundamental and underlying causes of disease
  • Heal the whole person by providing individualized treatment
  • Teach the principles of healthy lifestyle choices and preventative medicine
